Spring Security Authentication Inside a Vaadin Application

Securing Vaadin applications isn’t as straightforward as it looks. There are a few options already available: The AppFoundation add-on provides an authentication module, but it uses statics to access its functions, which I don’t like and it uses EclipseLink, a technology I have no experience with (and I don’t think it works with the Google AppEngine). A second option is to use the Vaadin Spring integration example that shows how to integrate Spring Security. Yet that one only has very course authentication (you’re either have access to everything or nothing).

Three jQuery Tutorials for a Perfect Photo Wall

I’ve been doing a little research into jQuery and the many many plugins and tutorials available. Vaadin and GWT can be nice if you want to create a full-blown web application, but sometimes you just need something a little lighter that just gets the job done. For instance, in this post I take a look at the existing tutorials to create a “photo wall”, a big webpage consisting of photos that can be manipulated.

AFOL Documentary

The documentary on adult fan’s of Lego (AFOL) that you can watch on Vimeo and that I embed below caught my attention for two different reasons. First, I’m a huge Lego fan, it’s mostly “passive” but I am in awe of all the creativity that can be found on the net. And secondly, I love how one guy with a lot of time and dedication can make such an engrossing documentary.
